Whether you're serving cocktails, wine, or water, pouring the drinks from an eye-catching carafe makes it feel a little more special.
"I have one on my desk because I like the fact that it brings a little personality," said Brittney Hart, who founded the Brooklyn-based architecture and design firm Husband Wife with her husband Justin Capuco. "It serves two purposes: being pretty and reminding me to do my healthy duty and have some water during the day."
Ms. Hart's office carafe, a vintage Gabriella Crespi piece that she found in Milan, reminds her of her travels. But she and Mr. Capuco also have plenty of other carafes at home that they use during dinner parties when a pandemic doesn't bother them.
"We'll just put them all on the table," she said. “Every two people get one. It's a nice, informal way of serving water. "
And whether your carafe is waiting on a dining table, desk or bedside table, it's better to run to the fridge or tap. "It really makes my day a little better," said Ms. Hart, "every day."

Is the carafe stable? If it's used on a desk with computers or a dining table shared with kids, look for a table with a wide, heavy bottom to protect against accidental spills, Ms. Hart suggested.

Should it coordinate with your drinking glasses? Not necessarily. "It doesn't have to be part of a series of glassware," she said, or even went with the other carafes on the table.

Is glass the best material? Sure, glass is beautiful, said Ms. Hart, "but having a piece of ceramic is wonderful too."
