Inside: The house has recently been modernized, with a new kitchen and new bathrooms, vinyl floors that look like wooden planks, and a floor plan that opens the main level front-to-back. The foyer now flows into the living room on either side of a fireplace that has a rear-facing wood fireplace.

The open kitchen has been remodeled at the other end, with white Shaker-style cabinets, granite countertops, and two industrial-style stainless steel pendant lights hanging over a peninsula of bar seating.

Behind the kitchen there is a bedroom with a wide closet and a bathroom in the hallway with a glass shower, a vanity with marble top and Moroccan patterned cement floor tiles.

The renovated upper floor is a room with a skylight, which is partially separated by the chimney. It extends from the front, where there is a particularly large, round window, to the rear and ends in a bathroom with a combined bathtub and shower and ceramic tiles.

Outside space: The new roof includes solar panels that generate revenue-generating electricity. A white picket fence is part of the enclosure of a side and rear lawn. Two cars are parked in a driveway on the other side of the house.

At the turn of the 20th century, this building was a police station in what was then a German working-class neighborhood called Over-the-Rhine (because it was separated from downtown Cincinnati in the south by a canal). A hundred years later, protests erupted in the neighborhood after numerous cases of police brutality against the largely black community in 2001 resulted in the death of an unarmed black teenager named Timothy Thomas. OTR, as the area is called, has since been redeveloped considerably.

This property was converted to condominium three years ago. It's one block west of Vine Street, with its many shops, restaurants, and bars, and less than a mile northwest of Kroger am Rhein, an 18-month-old concept supermarket and food court. West End Stadium, the soon-to-be home of Cincinnati FC, is 800 m away.
